CUSTOM DOMAINS
Company: Tableau
Project: Design new feature Custom Domains
Role: Lead UX Designer

The Problem
The primary reason customers want to use custom domains is to build trust with their clients. This is a brand new feature and required a new UX pattern and visual design. This feature has multiple steps, one which requires the admin to leave Tableau and complete a step on another site, then return to finish the set up on Tableau cloud.
The How
The team consisted of myself, PM, dev and visual design. I was the design lead and drove the project led by design. First step was to gather all the requirements and understand what the goals and scenarios of the project. Then I started working on initial design concepts. Designing a new pattern made a partnership with visual design crucial so that we adhered to the Tableau guidelines and could take into account other project that might want to use this pattern. I began by using elements already in the design guidelines, but we quickly realized that new design elements were needed to address all the requirements of this feature.

One requirement was to provide feedback on each step to let the user know that it was completed successfully before they could move to the next step. I worked with visual design on finalizing all of these elements so they met our requirements and also fit in with the established design guidelines. I did this through a series of iterations and reviews with the visual designer and the whole team. After getting their input and feedback, I would revise and then present the updates. This worked well, so everyone could provide feedback and keep up to date on the designs.
The Results
After the design iteration process was done, I worked with visual design to finalize the design and created final mock ups for the developer to work from.

Once a custom domain was set up, the setting then showed the basic information and allowed the user to either remove the domain or update the certificate. This feature was a cross-collaboration success story!
